From Proto-Yoruba *à-kèré, from Proto-Edekiri *à-kèré, ultimately proposed to be derived from Proto-Yoruboid *à-kèlé. Cognate with Igala àkèlé, Igbo àkèle, Nupe kèrégi, Edo ẹkirẹ, Idoma akere, and Urhobo okere.
