Inherited from Old Galician-Portuguese (the derived term alcajotar is attested in the 13th century); from Andalusian Arabic القَوَّاد (al-qawwád), from Arabic قَوَّاد (qawwād, pimp). Cognate with Portuguese alcaguete, Spanish alcahuete.
