Etymology

edit

From Old Swedish askuoþensdagher. By surface analysis, aska +‎ onsdag.

Noun

edit

askonsdag c

  1. Ash Wednesday
  2. (proscribed) Holy Wednesday

Usage notes

edit

Following the Reformation in Sweden, the original practice of marking the heads of the congregation with ashes ceased and the original meaning of the word fell into oblivion. By confusion, the word has in popular usage instead begun to be applied for the Wednesday preceding Easter. A more appropriate term for the latter is dymmelonsdag.
