Etymology edit
From Ottoman Turkish بكار (bekâr, “bachelor”), from Arabic بِكْر (bikr, “virgin”). Historically confused with بیكار (bekâr), a Persian word meaning unemployed as in the Ottoman بیكار اوطهلری (bekâr odaları) which were shelters for unemployed people to stay in.
