Borrowing from Arabic بَرْقُوق (barqūq, plums), a borrowing from Byzantine Greek βερικοκκία (berikokkía, pl.), from Ancient Greek πραικὄκιον (praikókion), from Late Latin (persica) praecocia (pl.), (mālum) praecoquum, neuter of Latin (persicum) praecox (literally over-ripe peach).
