editCompound of bita (“bitter”) + wiwiri (“leaf”), referring to its bitter taste. First attested in 1740 as bita wirri wirri in the unpublished anonymous manuscript Ontwerp tot Eene Beschryving van Surinaamen [Draft of a description of Suriname].[1]
