Calque of Latin bonus nuntius (“good news”), calque of Ancient Greek εὐαγγέλιον (euangélion, “good news”). Cognate with English gospel and good news, French bonne nouvelle, Portuguese boas novas, and Italian buone notizie.

- Buenas nuevas is generally more popularly used than the singular Buena nueva.
- Buena(s) nueva(s) may be considered old-fashioned by some due to the fact that nueva in this context may be misinterpreted as something "new" instead of "news" and is gradually being replaced by buenas noticias.
