Probably from Celtic *kentu̯ollos, from Proto-Celtic *kentu- (first) + *ɸolno- (great, vast), so meaning "the main, large one" ~ "king crab", vel sim.[1][2] Cognate with Portuguese santola and Spanish centolla.
