From Proto-Germanic *darnijaną ‎(to conceal), from Proto-Indo-European *dher(ǝ)-, *dhrē- ‎(to hold, hold tight, support). Cognate with Old English diernan ‎(to conceal), dyrnan ‎(to conceal) ; German tarnen ‎(to camougflage, disguise).
