Usage notes edit

Glossaries and dictionaries from the 18th and 19th centuries (e.g. An Etymological Dictionary of the Scottish Language: Illustrating the Words in Their Different Significations by Examples from Ancient and Modern Writers, Volume 1 by John Jamieson, 1808 and Northumberland Words, Volume 28 by Richard Oliver Heslop, 1892) imply that this term was particularly used in Northumberland and Scotland. The term disappears from reference works before the 20th century.
