From Old Norse embætti, from Proto-Germanic *ambahtiją, cognate with Swedish ämbete, German Amt, Dutch ambacht, doublet of amt (county)). Derived from *ambahtaz (servant), which is an old loan from Gaulish ambaxtos (vassal).
