From faʻa (causative prefix) +‎ ipoipo (reduplication of ipo (a lover)). Cognates include Tuamotuan hakaipoipo, Austral haʻaipoipo, Rarotongan ʻakaipoipo, Samoan faʻaipoipo, Tuvaluan fakaipoipo, Maori whakaipo (to tend with affection, cherish, court, woo, pet, coax), Hawaiian hoʻoipo (to make love, court, woo).[1]
