Etymology

edit

Uncertain. Perhaps from Proto-West Germanic *flaguk (flat piece), diminutive of Proto-Germanic *flagą (something flat, flat or level surface), from Proto-Indo-European *pleḱ- (fold, pleat) or Proto-Indo-European *pleh₂- (flat, broad; plain). Compare Old Norse flag (flat piece of land, plain, area, ground).
