Etymology

From Middle High German fabelen, derived from fabele, from Latin fabula. Cognate with German fabeln (to dream up, talk nonsense). The vocalism -ue- reflects the regular Luxembourgish development; the noun Fabel (fable) was influenced by Standard German.
