gạc
Vietnamese edit
Pronunciation edit
Etymology 1 edit
Compare Proto-Katuic *ʔŋgaak (whence Pacoh acec (“branch”)).
In spite of superficial resemblance, this word is not a descendant of Chinese 角 (MC kaewk, “horn”) (SV: giác), which had a very different vowel during the Old Chinese period, while later forms disagree with Vietnamese gạc in terms of voicing and (lack the) environment for lenition.
