Etymology edit

From older gélbsti +‎ -ėti, akin to Old Prussian galbimai (to assist). Further origin unclear. Comparisson has been drawn with Proto-Germanic *helpaną (to help).

(dialectally) gelbė́ti (third-person present tense gelbė́ja, third-person past tense gelbė́jo)
