höyhen
Finnish edit
Etymology edit
From Proto-Finnic *heühen, akin to Proto-Samic *sëvsëm. Cognates include Karelian heyhen, Livvi höyhen, Veps hüuneh.
Pronunciation edit
Noun edit
höyhen
- feather (in general, including flight feathers)
- (specifically) feather (less stiff feather than sulka; see usage notes)
Usage notes edit
Finnish general usage usually distinguishes between flight feathers (sulka) and the shorter and softer feathers that cover a bird's body (höyhen). Closest to the skin is the fine untuva (“down”), which helps to maintain body heat in cold weather. höyhen can however also be used as an umbrella term that encompasses all types of feathers.
