Etymology

edit

Uncertain. Perhaps a derivative or alteration of earlier hafettan, from Proto-West Germanic *habattjan, from Proto-West Germanic *hab, *habu (lift, lifting) + *-attjan. Equivalent to *hafu +‎ -ettan.

Alternatively, an alteration of āfētian (to stomp with the feet, applaud, praise). Possibly a merger of both theories.
