Unknown. The most common etymology given is a derivation from Latin fibula (“buckle”), although this presents some phonetic and semantic difficulties (perhaps the meaning developed from the idea of a clasp or buckle holding or fixing onto something). Cf. the variant forms, and also the possibly related fiulare. It may alternatively simply be an expressive formation.[1]

- (regional, rare, Moldavia (region), popular) part of expressions such as "în hiolă", which means dragging behind, being dragged or pulled closely behind, being pushed with, or "fiula vântului", meaning the powerful current or force of the wind, or "a lua în fiulă", meaning to take something by stabbing or digging into it, such as with a fork, spear, horn, claws, etc.[2]
