British home and distant lower quadrant semaphore signals, most of which are now superseded by colour light signals. The home signal has a red arm, when in the horizontal position it is at danger, meaning a train must stop.

1. (rail transport) A railway signal controlling entry to the next section of line. Originally it meant a signal governing entry into a station.
