Ioticized dialectal variant of an earlier gàuju (with the fricatization of the intermediate semiconsonants /ˈjaw.j(i).ʊ/ < /ˈja.vjʊ/), from an older unattested form *ga(u)j(i)u, from Latin gaudium (joy). Cognate with Portuguese goivo and Sardinian gaju.
