From Vulgar Latin *iacium, from the same root of Latin iaceō (I lie, recline). Compare Italian giaccio (pen for sheep) (also diaccio and addiaccio) and Romanian jeț. Compare, for more, Italian Ajaccio and Sicilian Agghiazzu.
