From Proto-Albanian *karpudā, from Proto-Indo-European *kerp, *(s)kerp. Cognate to Greek καρπός ‎(karpós, fruit), κείρω ‎(keírō, to cut off), Latin carpere 'to seize', German Herbst. Alternatively, compare Lithuanian kèpuré ‎(cap) and Latvian cępure ‎(id).
