Etymology

Cognate with dialectal Dutch kuieren (“to chat”), of which it is uncertain whether it is the same word as kuieren (“to walk leisurely”). Ultimately perhaps an iterative form of Proto-Germanic *kweþaną (*kwiþirōną or the like). Compare also Dutch koeteren, German kaudern, both “speak unintelligibly, give birdcalls”, etc.
