From Middle High German *kniuwel, dissimilated from kliuwel, a diminutive form of kliuwe, from Old High German kliuwa., from Proto-Germanic *klewô (“clump, mass, ball”). Cognate with German Knauel (more common variant Knäuel), also English clew, clue.
