From Proto-Balto-Slavic *klā́ˀtei (to lay, stack), from Proto-Indo-European *kléh₂-ye-ti, the ye-present of *kleh₂- (to put; to lay out). Cognate with Latvian klāt (to cover), Proto-Slavic *klàsti (to put, set down, stack).[1]
