Etymology

edit

Possibly an unshifted relict, but regarding that the verb is restricted chiefly to the secondary sense “to blink” and has weak conjugation, probably borrowed from a Low Franconian dialect, from Middle Dutch knīpen, from Proto-West Germanic *knīpan.
