Etymology

Cognate with Latvian krist (fall), and also related to Lithuanian krė̃sti (to shake, jolt), Latvian krèst (to fall, drop, die). Outside of Baltic, possibly from Proto-Indo-European *kret- (to shake suddenly), and related to Old Norse hrata (fall), Proto-Germanic *hradaz (quick, hasty), Old Irish crothaim (shake).[1]
