Maltese edit

Etymology edit

Borrowed from Sicilian cunventu, from Latin conventus.

Pronunciation edit

Noun edit

kunvent m (plural kunventi)

  1. (religion) convent, monastery
Synonyms: (less common) monasteru, (obsolete) dejr

Usage notes edit

  • As with Italian convento and monastero, the Maltese words are generally not distinguished at all, or are distinguished by criteria other than gender. Nevertheless it is of course possible that the English distinction between a convent (for nuns) and a monastery (for monks) is adopted into Maltese by individual speakers.
