Unknown. Compare Czech lotr (rascal, scoundrel), Polish łotr (villain, scoundrel), from German Lotter (loafer, idler), ultimately from Proto-Germanic *ludraz (useless; worthless; bad). Latin latro (highwayman, bandit) is thought to be unrelated.
