Borrowed from Swahili makasi,[1][2] from Arabic مَقَص (maqaṣ).

Pronunciation

As for Tonal Class, Benson (1964) classifies this term into Class 9 with a disyllabic stem, together with gĩcũhĩ, njũi, and so on.
