editCognate to Massachusett mahtântam, mohtantam (“he is old, decrepit”),[1] literally "failing-minded" or "poorly-minded",[2] from maht- (“passing on”) + -antam (suffix indicating a mental state). Also compare Massachusett mahtsheau (“it fails, perishes, fades”).
