  The middle ear structure of non-mammaliaform cynodonts is derived from the monossicular condition present in more basal synapsids and certainly different from both the triossicular structure of early mammaliaforms and mammals and the monossicular pattern of living reptiles [5 –6, 9, 14 –15, 27, 57 –61 ].
