mormyrin (plural mormyrins)

Any elephantfish of the subfamily Mormyrinae.

  Several morphological characters readily distinguish Petrocephalus and the mormyrin genera, such as the presence of two closely apposed nostrils (versus non closely apposed in mormyrins) and the absence of the basisphenoid bone (versus presence in mormyrins; Taverne 1972).
