Etymology

edit

From Proto-Algonquian *nyi·šwi. The presence of the second nasal in all recordings is unclear. It is unlikely to be an error of the ear, as both Strachey and Smith write the word with two. Perhaps irregular nasal spreading due to the number's frequent use.
