From Proto-Mien *ɲənꟲ.

Likely related to Hmongic reflexes such as White Hmong noj (“to eat”) and Western Xiangxi Miao [Fenghuang] nonx (“to eat”), but the correspondence is difficult to reconcile (Ratliff, 2010).
