Samoan edit

Etymology edit

Uncertain. Possibly from Malay barang, as the term seemingly originally referred to (foreign) cloth, but the comparison with Persian فرنگی (farangi), which has descendants throughout Southeast Asia, has attracted much attention, as has a folk etymology identifying the word with Europeans' guns.
