paddle box (plural paddle boxes)

  1. (nautical) An enclosed structure around a paddlewheel.
    • 1939 June, G. W. Tripp, “The Modern Railway Steamer”, in Railway Magazine, page 397:
      As these [paddle] steamers have not the usual paddle boxes with vents, they look like modern screw steamers, and their good looks are improved by their two masts.
