From Ancient Greek παστοφόρος (pastophóros). Paul Christian, a French writer born 1811, in his book History and Practice of Magic says that "A Magus, who bears the name Pastophore comes to open the grating to the postulant." The term Pastophore is there defined as "guardian of the sacred symbols.".
