Etymology

Probably borrowed via Basque from Vulgar Latin *pistanna, from an uncertain Indo-European language, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *pstḗn (teat, nipple); compare Proto-Germanic *spenô (nipple) and Ancient Greek στῆθος (stêthos, breast, chest). Related to Spanish pestaña.
