presidentti
FinnishEdit
EtymologyEdit
Borrowed from Swedish president, from Old French president, from Latin praesidēns (literally “sitting in front”), prae- + sedeō (“sit”) from Proto-Italic *sedēō, from Proto-Indo-European *sed-; whence distantly cognate to satula from Proto-Finnic *satula, English saddle, borrowed via Proto-Germanic *sadulaz; also compare Proto-Slavic *sěděti hence Russian сиде́ть (sidétʹ); to be distinguished from more immediate learned relatives like German Präsident, Italian presidente, Russian президе́нт (prezidént), French président, English president.
