Etymology

edit

Of uncertain origin. Probably from an innovative vowel alternant of the root *rauš- found in words like riáušės (mutiny, riot), itself likely related to raũsti (to dig up, root up),[1] from Proto-Indo-European *h₃rews-, itself an extension of *(H)rewH- (to tear out, dig out).[2]
