Inherited from Sanskrit श्वश्रू (śvaśrū́), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *swaćrúH, from Proto-Indo-European *sweḱrúh₂. Cognate with Maharastri Prakrit 𑀲𑀸𑀲𑀽 (sāsū), Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀲𑀸𑀲𑀼𑀏 (sāsue).
