Etymology

Equivalent to skør (“fragile”) +‎ bug (“stomach”), from Old Norse skyrbjúgr (“scurvy”), cognate with Norwegian skjørbuk, Swedish skörbjugg. A compound of skyr (“sour milk”) +‎ bjúgr (“swelling”). The Old Norse word has been borrowed to Dutch scheurbuik, German Scharbock, and French scorbut (hence English scurvy and New Latin scorbutus).
