A denominal verb from an unattested *skala or *skalas (compare ìšskalos (water with which a vessel is rinsed)), from the same word family as skélti (to split, cleave), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kelH- (to cut, to cleave).[1] Cognate with Latvian skalinat (to rinse); see skal̃bti (to wash) for further discussion.
