From Middle Dutch smade, from Proto-Germanic *smēhijaną (“to despise, belittle”), from Proto-Indo-European *smēyg- (“small, thin, delicate”). See also Old Norse smá (“to scorn”), Proto-Germanic *smikraz (“fine, fair”).[1]
