static friction (uncountable)
- (classical mechanics) Friction between two or more solid objects that are not moving relative to each other.
- Coordinate term: kinetic friction
2006, Rusty L. Myers, The Basics of Physics, Greenwood Publishing Group, →ISBN, page 46:Two main types of friction that exist are static friction and kinetic friction. Static friction keeps an object from moving when a force is applied. A person pushing on a heavy object is unable to budge it because of static friction.
