From Dutch zweven, from Middle Dutch sweven, from Old Dutch sweben ‎(to freely move back and forth, float), from Proto-Germanic *swibēną ‎(to move), from Proto-Indo-European *sweyp-, *sweyb- ‎(to twist, turn around). Cognate with German schweben ‎(to float).
