From Dutch zweven, from Middle Dutch sweven, from Old Dutch sweben(to freely move back and forth, float), from Proto-Germanic *swibēną(to move), from Proto-Indo-European *sweyp-, *sweyb-(to twist, turn around). Cognate with German schweben(to float).
