Etymology edit

From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *kyəw (sweet). Cognate with Burmese ချို (hkyui, sweet), Nuosu (qy, sweet) and Situ kə-tɕʰi (sweet). Compare Lhao Vo cug', Zaiwa chui, Luxi Achang tɕhau⁵⁵ and possibly Hpon xwí(ˀ).
