Coined by Honoré Théodoric d'Albert de Luynes in 1835, as a replacement for the term triquetra. Represents Ancient Greek τρισκελής (triskelḗs, “three-legged”), composed of τρι- (tri-, “three”) and σκέλος (skélos, “leg”).
